It lies on the southeast tip of Lake Chelan, where the lake flows into the Chelan River.

Chelan is part of the Wenatchee East Wenatchee Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The Chelan region was home to Salish speaking Native Americans known as the Chelan tribe before to white settlement in the late 1800s.

These diseases wiped out an estimated 90% of the Indians before David Thompson, the very first explorer in the area, appeared on the Columbia in 1811. The horse and the culture of the horse so prevalent with Indians of the Plains also took over by the time explorers and pioneer arrived, so it is difficult to know what the initial inhabitants' lives were truly like and who the Indians were before these monumental shifts to their way of life.

Although not a Chelan Indian himself, Chief Moses (a Shahaptin, not Salish speaker from the Columbia Basin and Okanagan) nearly had a large section of territory set aside for a reservation.

Colonel Henry Clay Merriam of the United States Army established Camp Chelan at the foot of Lake Chelan to control and safeguard the Indian populace on the Moses Columbia Reservation.

The first European pioneer in the region were William Sanders (one of chief streets in Chelan is titled after him) and Henry Dumpke, who appeared in 1886.

Following the Panic of 1893, difficult times began in earnest but never affected Chelan completely.

Chelan was officially incorporated on May 7, 1902.

22.4% of inhabitants were under the age of 18; 7.6% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 20.9% were from 25 to 44; 30.2% were from 45 to 64; and 18.9% were 65 years of age or older.

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,522 citizens , 1,471 homeholds, and 939 families living in the city.

The populace density was 933.9 citizens per square mile (360.7/km ).
